• Hanovia type photoreactor

    Updated: 2012-03-31 17:44:55
I want to prepared ascididemin by Moody's method (Tetrahedron 1992, 48, 3589-3602), but in the last fourth step I need Hanovia type photoreactor with quartz filter, which I have not. Please, can you advertised me, what can I do, or what other reaction conditions I must use to ensure the photolysis of quinoneimine. Thanks a lot for advice.

    Updated: 2012-03-23 23:10:42
Everybody knows by now that China is flush with rare earth elements (REE’s), or at least to the uppermost extent that any country can be. And, everybody knows the market hijinks that China has planned with REE’s, namely, buy all the REE’s you want from them, as long it is in a value-added manufactured good. What [...]

Lots happening but, sadly, nothing I can blog about. I need to get some RC1 experiments done before I head off to San Diego for the ACS National Meeting and Research Pageant.  I really like this Mettler-Toledo RC1 and the sales and support staff. Pretty helpful folks in my experience. The Swiss make some fine [...]

  • Most Popular Chemistry Article for February 2012

    Updated: 2012-03-18 07:24:24
I forget that ChemFeeds allows me a very unique window into the popularity of various chemistry articles across chemistry publishers (e.g., ACS, RSC, Nature). For February, the most popular article was an editorial penned by Roald Hoffmann critiquing the chemistry community's response to the 2011 chemistry Nobel prize. What, Another Nobel Prize in Chemistry to [...]

  • The degree symbol- Do we really need to keep using it?

    Updated: 2012-03-06 20:37:39
I had an evil thought just now as I attempt to write 2 reports simultaneously. Why do we keep using that superscripted circle in front of C (i.e., ºC) that designates “degree”? What the hell? We don’t use it for the Kelvin temperature scale. And, who knows if the engineers use it for Rankine? The thing [...]

  • Fear and Loathing with Frac Fluids

    Updated: 2012-03-03 22:43:23
There is considerable handwringing over hydraulic fracturing fluids and their potential effects on “the environment”. I use quotes in ironic fashion because I see very little parsing of the issue into relevant components. The chemical insult to the environment is highly dependent on both the substances and the extent of dispersion. But I state the obvious. There are [...]
